What is Pectus Excavatum Surgery in Korea?

Pectus excavatum surgery is a medical procedure aimed at correcting pectus excavatum, a congenital deformity where the breastbone (sternum) is sunken into the chest. This condition can cause physical symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, and reduced exercise tolerance, as well as psychological impacts due to its appearance.

Types of Pectus Excavatum Surgery

  1. Nuss Procedure:
  • Minimally Invasive: Involves small incisions on the sides of the chest.
  • Procedure: A curved metal bar is inserted behind the sternum to elevate it to a normal position.
  • Duration: The bar typically remains in place for 2-4 years before being removed.

  2.Ravitch Procedure:

  • Open Surgery: Involves a larger incision across the chest.
  • Procedure: The surgeon removes the abnormal cartilage and repositions the sternum.
  • Duration: The recovery period is longer compared to the Nuss procedure, but it is often used for more severe cases.

Goals of the Surgery

  • Physical Improvement: Enhancing cardiopulmonary function by expanding the chest cavity, which improves lung and heart function.
  • Cosmetic Improvement: Correcting the appearance of the chest to boost self-esteem and reduce psychological distress.
  • Symptom Relief: Alleviating symptoms such as chest pain, respiratory issues, and exercise intolerance.

Recovery and Considerations

  • Recovery Time: Varies depending on the procedure, but typically includes several weeks of restricted physical activity.
  • Risks: As with any surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, and complications related to anesthesia.
  • Follow-up Care: Regular follow-ups are essential to monitor the position of the sternum and the patient's overall recovery.
